Location Malta | Hollywood in the Mediterranean
Malta is hosting a full slate of European film productions in 2011 including Sinbad the Sailor, Asterix and Obelix series and God Save Britannia. These films follow Malta's success in 2010 with The Devils Double and a whole line of films and TV series all filmed on the beautiful islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. The island has amazing backdrops including the historical fortifications of Mdina, Valletta and Ricasoli and fantastic beaches as well as one of the main attractions in Malta - its world famous SFX water tanks. An added benefit are Malta’s typical Mediterranean villages which have hardly changed providing the ideal backdrop for films such as Munich. The Mediterranean climate ensures that filming can be done throughout the year, with clear skies all year round, keeping production costs low. The island also boosts talented film extras, production crew and assistance provided by the Malta Film Commission.
The small size of the island ensures that distances between shoots is short and the island of Gozo is a mere 30 minutes ferry trip. Everyone on the island speaks English, with many fluent in Italian, French and German and locals are known for their friendliness and with a professional work ethic. Tax incentives are among the most advantageous in Europe with a up to 22% of the eligible expenditure available as a cash rebate by a qualifying production company once filming is complete.
