Trade licenses are required for specific trading activities in Malta and are granted by the Division of Commerce in Malta. The Commerce Department was set up towards the end of 2000, on the recommendation of the Operations Review carried out in the Ministry for Economic Services.
In addition setting up a business in Malta may also require ensuring that the premises fully complies with local permits. Permits for offices are issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and are required if office premises are to be fully in line with local legislation. Premises used for catering establishments as well as those operating within the tourist industry in Malta are also required to comply with specific legislation aimed at ensuring tourists are offered the highest standard of service in Malta.
